British Columbia intends to enhance the existing B.C. new housing rebates and will now include recreational properties, therefore including real estate at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. The enhanced rebates will be available after April 1, 2012 and before April 1, 2013.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort's Separate Reality venue was host to today's Qualifier for the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour. With few spots up for grabs in Friday’s Day 1 of competition, skiers pushed the limits of big mountain freeskiing to earn their spot. Taking first out of 60 competitors in the Men’s field was Benjamin Ogilvie from Fernie, BC. In first for the Women is Snowbird local Lexi Dupont from a stacked roster of 23 ladies.

"In today's qualifier, it was definitely clear that skiers needed to step up in every aspect of the criteria; they had to have great technique, control and fluidity," notes Head Judge Jim Jack on the selective cut. Out of the deep qualifier field, 13 men and 4 women will advance to Day 1 competition on North Bowl’s Unlimited Assets tomorrow. "It was a very competitive cut, so congratulations to the skiers that made it in," said Jack.

On the women’s side, athletes skied very smart and safe and 99 % of the competitors stayed on their feet. "Winner Lexi Dupont skied fast and fluid, with direct fall-line skiing," remarked Announcer Max Kuszaj. "It's no surprise she is sitting in the top qualifying position going into day 1." Canadian Crystal-Rose Lee was a close second. For the men, the majority of the skiers made the best use of the terrain and the style/creativity category by adding newschool tricks into their run, which benefited their scores. "A standout for me would be Fernie, BC's own Luke Nelson with his fast, fluid technical skiing on the top of Separate Reality, and smooth 360 at the bottom, encompassing all aspects we encourage in a competitor's run,” says Kuszaj.

Skiers on the mountain today experienced a mix of sun and snow with great conditions and visibility of the venue. “Conditions for this event are definitely shaping up to be some of the best we’ve had here at Revelstoke. The consistency of the snow will make landings cleaner and provides athletes a venue to showcase their abilities. Day 1 of the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour starts Friday, January 6, 2012 and will be broadcast live on www.freeskiingworldtour.com.

Kids ROC – NOW OPEN!

The NEW Kids ROC at Revelstoke Mountain Resort held an open house this past weekend to commemorate the opening for the season of this brand new facility!  This fantastic addition to the Revelstoke Outdoors Centre is a dedicated space for young snow school participants and kids après activities. The new space allows for easy drop off and pick up for parents, facilitates instructor and student gathering, and provides an entertaining lunchtime space for children enrolled in full day programs.  Kids ROC features fun play structures including a mini-climbing wall, foosball table, foam pit, and loads of games to play. In the evenings, Kids ROC offers après activities on certain nights of the week and will also be available for private rental functions such as birthday parties.

Throughout the Christmas Holidays, Kids ROC will offer a special activity calendar including movie, craft, and game nights plus special holiday snow school programs for both young ones and teens.

"Last year we took a huge step in the progression of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour when we introduced the style/creativity category which has opened the door to a new generation of skiers who are incorporating new school tricks into fluid, solid skiing on big mountain terrain, and has encouraged the tour mainstays to get more creative," said Bryan Barlow, event director for the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. "As our events fill up faster each year, we've decided to introduce a pre-qualified list for the qualifier days. This will allow our returning athletes a chance to register first, and a number of 'open' spots will be available on a first come, first serve basis."

Heading into the third stop of the season, Guerlain Chicherit (FRA), who returned to the circuit after several years of absence, is in the lead for the men with 142 points, followed by Kirkwood's Josh Daiek with 126 points and Mad River Glen's Lars Chickering-Ayers with 114 points. For the ladies, Crystal Wright of Jackson, WY is in first with 171 points, followed closely by Snowbird's Angel Collinson with 168 points and Sole Diaz (CHE) in third with 125.

Athlete registration for Revelstoke will open December 7, 2011 at 10 am MST. Registration for all other stops will open December 15 at 10 am MST.

We are excited to open for the season this Saturday Dec 3, 2011!  Snowfall has been incredible leading up to the season start with 43cm of fresh snowfall this past week.

Starting this Saturday December 3, 2011, the resort is open for 7 day operations with first upload on the Revelation Gondola at 8:30am and the last chair on The Stoke at 3:00pm.  With The Ripper and The Stoke chair in operation, open terrain includes access to the North Bowl plus all runs to the base of The Stoke chairlift.

Mid-mountain Lodge and the village base can be accessed by download from the top of the Revelation Gondola.  Any terrain below the base of The Stoke chairlift is considered outside the operational ski area boundary.   We have received generous snowfall to date but please be aware that conditions are Early Season with a caution for potential natural hazards .

Occupy The Line – by Bruno Long

It's 11pm on Friday night.  The skies are clear and the air is cold.  I should be at home, sleeping in my warm bed, resting up for opening day at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

Instead, I am staring at 25 or so dedicated skiers and boarders who are camping at the base of the hill in hopes of nabbing first tracks.  Tents are set up in the maze, forming an impromptu base camp.  It's late but people are still buzzing with anticipation.  Some are well prepared, with sleeping bags, warm jackets and down booties.  Others, came ready to ski and have little more than a few beers and a space blanket to keep them warm though the night.  Boards are waxed on the hard concrete, while others sit around a makeshift campfire consisting of one tea light.  I take a few pictures to capture the moment and decide to head home.  My warm bed seems much more inviting than the cold, hard concrete mattress that some will sleep on tonight.  As I walk back to my truck, I can't help but feel a slight twinge of jealousy at those dedicated souls who will suffer through the night for an opportunity at some untracked powder runs.

The next morning, I arrive at the hill an hour before opening.  I know I am much too late to get anywhere close to the front of the line but I am not here to wait with the throngs of riders, hoping for first tracks on my favorite run.  I am here to capture the essence of 'The Lineup'.  I check in with the overnight campers; the tents and sleeping bags are gone.  The cold night seems to not have had an effect on them and their spirits are high. They have done it.  They will be on first chair of the year, something they will lay claim to for years and deservedly so. From the start of the line, I lift myself onto my toes to survey the line.  It extends further and further back, with more cars and people arriving every minute.  As I scan the crowd and talk with friends, I see all types of snow enthusiasts. Skiers and snowboarders sharing stories of past openings.  Young kids, possibly at their first opening day experience.  Locals who remember waiting for first t-bar (not first gondola).  Professional riders, guides and local business owners all wait their turn.  There is even a group that has brought their own stove and are offering people free hot chocolate while they 'Occupy' and inform people through political songs.  Even with all this diversity, there is a unified feeling in the air.  Everyone is here for the exact same reason, to slide around on snow at their local hill for the first time this season.  Well over 500 hundred people have gathered at the base to catch a sneak peak at what Revelstoke Mountain Resort has in store for the season.  With a fantastic start and a deep November base, surely none will be disappointed. 

At exactly 8:30 am, those who suffered through the night finally get their chance to load the first gondola of the year.  They cram into the cabin and just before the door closes, they look at me and cheer.  They fade away into the fog and I wonder about their first run.  Where will they go?  Will the suffering be worth it?  It almost certainly will be.  As I watch each cabin fill up and the lineup slowly dissipate, I realize that it is time for me to reflect on my own first day experience.  As I walk back up to my truck and finally put on my own boots, I wonder what my first run will be  As I ski towards the maze through the remnants of 'The Lineup' to get my pass scanned for the first time this season, I know somewhere high above the Stoke chair, people are skiing their favorite runs and have already forgotten about the long wait they had in the morning.  I step into the gondola and as the door closes, I already know where my first run will take me.
